Step 3: Time To Wire

You will want your adaptors to be short since they need to only span a few inches. The wires simply snap into place in the VW adapter. Make sure the wires go all the way into the adaptor and snap into place. Use of shrink tubing around the wire joints will help to ensure a more weather-tight seal. Just make sure you slip the tube over the wire before you start connecting the wires together. Another option is to use electrical tape, but it isn't quite as durable as the shrink tubes.

As for methods of connecting, people have used butt connectors, heat shrink butt connectors, and soldering. It's entirely up to you how to handle the connection.

On the inside ring of the Ford adaptor (YS4Z-13A006-CA) you will see numbers on the side where the wires come out of the plastic.
the wires are in locations 4, 6 and 7.

On the VW adaptor (1JO-973-735) there are numbers for each wire also. You will be wiring up 1,2,3,4,6, and 8.

Now it's time to connect:

Light Function Wire From Ford Adaptor Location Wire Leading Into VW Adaptor Location
Ground 4 6 and 8
High Beams 6 1
Low / Xenon Beams 7 2
City Light Not applicable 3
Turn Signal Not applicable 4

To get a better idea, Silfox from Focaljet has created a simplified diagram for the ST-170 lights on the VW Adapter side. For Mach HID purposes, all that differs from the ST-170's are the additional ground wires, and the reversal of pins 3 and 4.

Thanks to SilFox for this great wiring diagram.

Look at the ends of the VW adapter and push in the little clip when all of the wires are firmly seated.

If you want to protect your wiring job, you may want to cover the wiring in corrugated electrical tubing.

Make note of which wires leading into the VW adaptor is #3 and #4. This will save a lot of headaches later trying to figure out which is which.

Change fuse #'s 16 & 17 in the fuse block under the hood to 15 amp fuses.

Special Tip from Paolo:

If you plan on keeping your stock grille, and using the stock grille blinkers ONLY and omitting the blinkers in the headlamps, wire them up like this:

Just connect pins 1,2 and 8 on the VW to the Ford headlamp connector. That way, your headlamps are used for High and Low beams, and your grille's are used for your turn signals. If you connect pins 1,2 and 6, your headlamps will not turn on.
